What to think as the mainstream world becomes dumber each day….
Maybe it doesn’t deserve my attention. But I am sharing my thoughts because I know so many of you here share similar ones.
Gone are the days of anything with integrity being shared on the internet; specifically in the social media spaces. I am sure integrity still exists rarely, maybe on people’s blogs or their more intimate newsletters where no one cares about likes or shares or comments because there aren’t any.
We are in the midst of an idiocracy; the social media that once was many years ago seems to have served the purpose of training those folks (I once was one) to react to the algorithm and to make “content” that pleases the masses. One is only shown the things they already know about, so there isn’t a place for sharing wisdom (really at all) or with people that the wisdom might be new for. “Just share what we tell you” is what’s happening. There are so many evils to this mechanism I don’t have enough time in my life to fully list it all.
Society (again mainstream) has become about numbers and how fast you can do a thing. Please note this is not about how WELL you can do a thing. It’s only about how fast. I thought it was just in the student midwife/birthkeeper part of the universe that this was true; call yourself a midwife or put yourself out to attend homebirths simply because you can. And it’s become “acceptable”. But it’s not about time spent learning or absorbing, it’s about doing it fast.
Turns out surfing has those people too! Only difference is they are usually men. They pick up a board and teach themselves to surf, which in part is cool, but offering yourself as a surf coach after you’ve done only that for 6 months is so unethical to me, that I don’t have any other words.
But ethics, if that is a thing, seems to not matter. It’s again how many views, how many likes, how many shares….but it’s empty. Or it is for me, which is why I don’t participate anymore. It’s totally empty and means literally nothing and maybe half of those likes are being made my AI? Sure.
I’m saying all this to ask you what is REAL in your life and how can you do more of it? How can I do more of it? Can we inspire each other? Can we be real people in real places and build something cool? Maybe it is there in your community or maybe it is still an online thing but it’s grounded, rooted in who YOU ARE and your own authenticity.
I’m taking the long game here and will be waiting on the sidelines trying my best to be authentic while much of the world goes down in a social media and AI slop. No thanks. I will wait, and I will see and feel the world I chose to be in.
Thanks for reading!
