I nearly got hit by a car today turning left as I crossed the road with my dog.
It’s not the first time this has happened at this intersection; there were at least three times last year during the school year.
You see, there is a school across the street and if you (apparently) try to cross the road as school drop off is happening, you risk your life.
I’m being a little dramatic, and I did see the car coming and flagged her down waving my arms until she noticed me.
How could a person not notice a full grown human and a dog crossing the road?
Here’s my theory.
Each time this has happened it’s at school drop off time. I hate to say it, but each time this has occurred there is a woman at the wheel.
I don’t know any of these women, and I am only assuming they are mothers (hence the school drop off).
I saw in this woman’s eyes the disconnect. And the shock.
Maybe she was having an off day.
Or maybe she was exhausted, up all night with the dog or a kid. Or maybe she was just about to get a break and was giddy with excitement.
Either way, imagine being so dis-embodied that you might cause an accident like this. It’s possible for any of us, but my sense is that the average woman out there is far from IN her body.
This is not a judgement but an observation. If one is IN their body and present in the moment it would be near impossible to not notice turning your car into a human.
Who knows what she had going on.
The phone, the texts, the agenda for the day, the forgot the lunch, the kid in the back seat screaming, the unstable feeling marriage and OMG why-do-i-have-to-do-EVERYTHING.
If I knew who this woman was, I’d tell her about my Catch Your Breath Club coming up.
We all have a piece of this chaos, but I can show you how to notice what’s there.
My mission on Earth is to remind you of your wholeness. Your greatness. Your ability to do hard and beautiful things.
But first, rest. First, feel. Get in your body. You truly can’t do anything great if that’s not where you are.
And this car-lady reminds us of that to the extreme. When we don’t care of ourselves, andremember we are also here with a Mission….we might actually cause damage to ourselves and others.
Check out the Catch Your Breath Club which starts in September.
