I was just re-reading one of the few newsletters I subscribe to.
It was written by a (virtual) surf coach of mine; a guy I have gotten to know, to learn from and who I really admire.
His focus of topic was the community that often arises around surfing. How the waves are just a “bonus” and how people connecting with people is where it’s at.
Even though I am still pretty new in the surf world, I always appreciate a “hello” or “howzit” (local slang) when I am out in the water. I try to greet people too, if I can catch their eye, which isn’t always possible. I find myself feeling this odd combination of opposing things; on one hand, until “people” becomes “person”, surfing in a group of them can be pretty annoying.:). Everyone wants waves, and the etiquette can be lacking.
But once “people” becomes “person” I find myself liking them so much better.
I even made two lady surfing friends this week, and as silly as it sounds, it is SO NICE TO SEE WOMEN out in the water and make connection with them. To say that there are a ton of dudes would be an understatement.
This week I met Emily and Liz; no idea where they live exactly or much else, but we had fun catching waves somewhat together and maybe even rolling our eyes together at some of the dudes:). Getting to know someone, even a little bit, changes how I feel about them. Suddenly we can be allies out there taking waves, and not opposition.
This surfing example is such a small scale example of what I want in my world. Even here, with you where we might come together for my Magical Mama Circle, or maybe it’s somatic sessions, or maybe you just like my writing and want to stay connected.
Those of you that HAVE subscribed to my VIP (free) email and snail mail list already have me excited. I have gotten to know so many of you more than I would think possible here in this internet world, just based on what you shared on your form with me. THIS is the kind of connection I want, and I am so excited to get mailing to your mailboxes this year because then what is possible? We will be that much more “woman” to each other rather than a nameless sea of women.
So, this is one of the last chances to subscribe to the free list because sometime mid-month I will be deleting the rest of the list here. Sign up if you want to be included, do nothing and I will eventually delete your email address.
One last thing, last chance to get my collection of pre-recorded Midwife Stories. I recorded these slowly over the last 6 months and they are secret and available only to people who subscribe.
They are all resting comfortably in an archive now, so this is the final call to have access to those….I included first birth stories, miscarriage stories, and various blabs about my life as an apprentice and new midwife. If you have a doula or student midwife or midwife in your life, I think this would make a really cool gift. Just an idea.
Have a beautiful week!
Oxoxo
