We had a massive swell (storm in the ocean that makes waves!) this week so lessons were aplenty. Here are a few that might resonate with you.
The Ocean is such a fascinating personality. You can visit the same break day after day and then BAM with a storm swell she suddenly changes her face and her energy. It might be subtle if you’re not in her waters, but it’s still an amazing lesson about how nature is constantly morphing and shapeshifting. Just like us. Our subtle energy changes day to day, minute to minute and so does that of the Ocean and the other elements. One way this showed itself this week was in the crazy, monstrous shoerbreak. To get out into the Ocean, you must pass the bouncer. Some days it is no big deal; however during this storm, the shore break was easily over my head and add in trying to get past her with a giant 9 foot board. It wasn’t the first time and it won’t be the last but if I learned anything, it was purely about timing.
Timing isn’t when it works out for you, timing is following the (in this case, literal) FLOW. We must be patient and wait. We can want the timing to be sooner and in the case of shore break, you will be smashed. Same with waiting too long. There is an opportune moment when the seas clear and ready or not….that is the timing.
Where in your life are you trying to rush or make something go at your speed?
There is the timing of nature. And similar, Divine timing. I’ve found that “timing” can be used as an excuse too. It’s just not the right time, but it’s more of a fear based or procrastination thing. You’ll have to feel that for yourself and decide. When I approach the ocean, I am actually afraid sometimes. I try to just breathe and trust and allow her to show me what the timing is, and what my timing will be. It’s not always what I think but I have learned to honor it.
When in the Ocean, I notice the energy of her and how sometimes (especially if she’s feeling chaotic) people IN the Ocean will appear that also hold that energy. We get a choice in who we surround ourselves with, on land or in water. I learned this week to just remove myself from weird people and weirs stuff, for yes my safety but also just because. Choose the energy you want to be around and don’t let weird shit in. Unless you want to be affected by it! One of my surf sessions was cut short by this practice but I have no regrets. When you feel in your body that there is unstable energy around, you can practice grounding yourself. Then, make what feels like the best choice. In my case, it was to exit.
Lastly, commit to something. Commit to learning the new thing. Commit to your relationship. Commit to having a positive attitude. Whatever it is for you, feel your determination and your unwavering-ness in your body and decide you are going to give it your all. For me it feels like my feet are firmly on the ground and my body is solid. I had way too many wacky falls this week on my board until my coach dared me to commit to staying on. It was like a lightbulb went off because it had been feeling like “oops, I fell!” Until I realized I CONTROL THAT. Of course I do not control the ocean, but I control my commitment of staying on the wave even when it gets tough. Even when the wave or life wants to throw you off….you stay centered and present. Make it harder to get thrown! It’s amazing how a simple mind shift kept me on longer, riding further. I was kind of just being a wimp beforehand but I had really allowed myself this luxury of not stepping up and taking charge.
DO it. Step up. Live joyfully.
You’re right where you should be, and if these lessons resonate for you, let me know!
