I was walking my dogs last evening when a car stopped and a woman jumped out.
“This is going to sound insane…” is how she started.
I thought for sure she’d comment on our new tiny puppy (more on her another time!) but once she said her name I immediately knew who she was even though we had not met in person.
Over the last 12 years (!!!) this woman and I have exchanged emails here and there.
As a doula and aspiring midwife, this woman connected with Indie Birth “before it was Indie Birth” (her words!) and I think has remained inspired and connected ever since.
I don’t meet “fans” (if that’s what people that truly align with your work are called) or even our own IBMS students all that often. I DO live on an island, but my point is that this Indie Birth community is solid.
Indie Birth has been growing slowly for years.
Honestly, I know we changed history when we started our first version of IBMS 8 years ago. We’ve change history in other ways since then by teaching about birth and sharing birth videos and generally being the “middle ground” for the extremists in our midst.
That a person nowadays can last 12 years in a community and still find the message solid and relevant is a HUGE reminder to me that a) our community and school are awesome and b) our message and vision has stood the test of time.
Indie Birth’s message and vision has not lost focus but gained clarity. We have always been about autonomy and self-realization and owning our power WAY before it was the trendy thing to say (we actually live it, not just say it, unlike the cult trend).
And now with the Indie Birth New Midwifery School, we are adding even more soul and heart and clarity to the how one BECOMES a midwife.
We aren’t granted this title by an organization and we aren’t midwives based on number of births attended.
Our new version of IBMS allows for all the BECOMING that we wished we had had ourselves.
Check out the Indie Birth New Midwifery School and join our September 2025 cohort.
