In the Eye of the Storm

If you didn’t hear (hey I don’t watch the news either or look on social) we had more rain on this island than I have ever seen in all my 48 years.

It crossed my mind more than once….can an island drown?

The amount of water that spilled from the skies went on for what felt like forever.  There were floods, a near-breaking of the dam up north (which would have been utter and complete catastrophe) and the Ocean became ill with brown water on every coastline…within hours.

It was like being in the eye of a hurricane (as an East Coaster I do know what that’s like) for DAYS ON END.

Gratefully, it seems like we are through.  Not all of the power is back on everywhere, and I am sure many people were not as lucky as us as far as flooding and damage go.  

Weirdly, at the same time the Ocean began showing signs of this chaotic cleanse, my body did too.

While no one else in this family was sick, I spent the major days of the storm in bed, unable to move or do anything.  Feverish and totally out of it, I felt so disembodied at the same time as experiencing a huge amount of discomfort.  

I would look out the window at the ocean, watching her deal with the storm in her own way. Trusting she could handle it, that somehow it is needed and that she will do her own work of cleaning herself. 

The parallel between me and the Ocean was undeniable.  I wonder if my body was responding to her, and call me weird…but this is the journey I have been on the last year.  The Ocean has been my apprenticeship, not just in surfing but in life.  

I am sure I will have more reflections as time goes on but I wanted to share this surreal, but potent experience with you.

We are connected to Nature, and to her cycles.  For better or worse, when we invite in her ancient wisdom….there are sometimes instances of burning, cleansing and shedding that we are asked to do.

Much like the winds and rain, we don’t get a choice in it (although I believe we did choose, long ago).
